Offsetting the
Heat Island Effect
The 2021 Biodesign Challenge (BDC) was held the week of June 21, with FIT’s team competing against 53 others from across the globe. Entrants included not just peer institutions such as Parsons School of Design and Rhode Island School of Design but also major research universities like Virginia Tech, the University of Michigan, and Rutgers. Each team presented their projects to a panel of leaders in academia, industry, art, and design before an international online audience, with a digital, live format instead of the traditional in-person setting. The FIT team presented their “Beat the Heat Movement” designs, which combine biomimicry and social programs to combat the urban heat island effect and environmental racism.
