Purpose/Impact
The ChalkFIT project began as a way for Shefelman to bring the work of Illustration students out of the classroom to connect it with a wider audience–while also enlivening the Brutalist campus exteriors. The AR component turns the artwork into a performance and conversation piece. Additionally, some students had to learn how to create fine detail using chalk on stone. The AR component added another dimension to the chalk murals, and students diversified their portfolio by designing a digital animation to enhance their traditional art.
Outcomes/Accomplishments
In addition to the public engagement, ChalkFIT has been featured in Spectrum News NY1, Chelsea Now, and the Daily Beast. The beautiful public gallery of murals stays up through the winter.
Status Update
As AR technology is refined, it will be further incorporated into this and other projects at FIT. Shefelman is already planning an upgrade for next year’s ChalkFIT.
