Purpose/Impact

This interdisciplinary course challenges ingrained stereotypes about the “scientist” and the “artist” by bringing the two together. Housing this course in two departments allows for hands-on, project-based learning within an innovative curriculum that empowers students to become leaders in increasingly interdisciplinary fields. The dual department contribution to this course helps FIT emerge as a national leader in STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics) education as well as in materials research and design for next-generation textiles.

By considering global challenges as central to design concepts and emphasizing the creative intersection of art, science, and technology, the course encourages students to engage with scientific research and to use critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork to solve complex problems.
